LINES Ballet’s 2025 Spring Season features choreographer Alonzo King’s first-ever collaboration with American jazz trumpeter/composer Ambrose Akinmusire—a spiritual seeker in the grand tradition of musical aspirationalists. Audiences will also have the opportunity to see King’s timeless work Scheherazade, which returns in full to the stage after over a decade.
World Premiere with Ambrose Akinmusire
Akinmusire has proved himself one of the most vital and deft trumpeters of his generation.
Akinmusire’s music overflows with both beauty and rigor, profound personal feeling, and fiery virtuoso playing. What one hears throughout his work is an artist plumbing the depths of himself and the world around him, coming to understand the workings of his own mind and the mysteries of nature. Both of those terrains are boundless, and Akinmusire is determined to follow them as far afield as they lead.
Ambrose Akinmusire has been making some of the most intimate spellbinding music of his career...even in its simplicity, Akinmusire’s trumpet can feel almost dangerously tender.
—The New York Times
This is subtly profound music, full of meditative focused beauty.
—Uncut
Scheherazade
The Paris-founded Les Ballets Russes’ 20-year blaze across Europe spawned masterpieces, caused riots, and set the future for Western theatrical dance. The modus operandi for this groundbreaking company was collaboration, They engaged the brightest luminaries redirecting 20th century art.
In 2009, Alonzo King was commissioned by the Monaco Dance Forum to create a modern version of the ballet Scheherazade to inaugurate the centenary of Les Ballets Russes.
For King’s version, Rimsky-Korsakov's thrilling score has been updated and reinterpreted by Grammy Award-winning musician/composer Zakir Hussain to include both Western and Eastern instruments—in addition to the violin, harp, and cello, the score incorporates traditional 5000-year-old instruments such as the rubab and nay, the Uzbek doira, and the Indian tabla.
