The San Francisco Philharmonic, under the baton of Maestra Jessica Bejarano, takes the stage of the Herbst Theatre on September 28 for their season opener, featuring the incomparable Cordula Merks playing two masterworks of the classical violin repertoire.
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Merks–the concertmaster of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and a captivating, powerhouse soloist–take on Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, almost 101 years after the concerto’s premier at the Paris Opera! Merks will then join the orchestra in complementing the Prokofiev concerto with the enchantingly familiar music of Tchaikovsky’s Entr’Acte to his ballet of The Sleeping Beauty.
Merks’s virtuosic talent, on full display in these two pieces, will anchor the packed concert program, which also features Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem The Tempest–based on the Shakespeare classic–and Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.
Bejarano and the San Francisco Philharmonic, now in their fifth season, have quickly become known for their dynamic interpretations of classical favorites, and for their mission to make high quality orchestral music available to Bay Area audiences at affordable prices.
